What makes a mutual fund’s share price (NAV) rise and fall?

A fund’s share price is determined by the market value of the securities it owns, less any liabilities. If the prices of the stocks, bonds or other investments owned by the fund increase or decrease, the fund’s share prices increase or decrease. Almost anything — global economics, politics, breakthrough inventions, unusual weather conditions, changed management, corporate scandal — can affect the prices of a fund’s investments and ultimately the fund’s shares.
