How long do annuity payouts continue?

Many annuities let you choose the length of time over which you want to receive income: your entire life, no matter how long that is; your entire life or a guaranteed number of years, whichever is longer; your entire life and your spouse's entire life; or a specific number of years. The shorter the potential payout period (for example 10 years vs. your entire life, which could be much longer), the higher your income payments.
